The pursuit of computing power by humans is endless. But just yesterday, we seemed to have taken a big step forward: California based startup Cerebras released the world's largest chip, specifically designed for AI computing.
This chip called Wafer Scale Engine (WSE) has 1.2 trillion transistors, which is 57 times the number of Nvidia's latest flagship GPU Titan V. Its size is already larger than an iPad:

WSE is built using TSMC's 16 nanometer process technology, with an area of 46225 square millimeters and 400000 cores. It has on-chip storage of up to 18G, power consumption of 15000 watts (approximately equivalent to the power of 6 induction cookers), memory bandwidth of 9PB/s, and communication structure bandwidth of 100PB/s. The company stated that using only one such chip can drive complex artificial intelligence systems, from autonomous vehicles to monitoring systems.

Cerebras' 'violent aesthetics' have caused people to exclaim that the number of transistors in WSE has exceeded the number of neurons in the human brain!
Prior to this, Samsung had actually developed a 2 trillion transistor flash memory chip (eUFS), but Cerebras' chip was used for processing work. In addition, WSE has achieved a speed increase of 3000 times and a storage bandwidth expansion of 10000 times.
